Effect of Ageing on Mobility

Impaired physical mobility affects the walking speed of senior citizens and the speed with which senior citizens get up and sit down. There are several factors which impact the mobility condition of senior citizens including reduced physical activity, obesity, diabetes and arthritis among others. Below is a classification of different levels of physical mobility:

Mobility

Mobility 0

Under mobility 0 conditions, adults are able to move on their own without the help of any guidance. They visit to the washrooms or to outdoor places is possible under mobility 0 as there is no need of a wheel-chair or a stick. With mobility 0, adults can perform day-to-day activities like using the toilet seat, lying down on the bed for sleeping and sitting on a chair smoothly.

Mobility1

Mobility 1

Under mobility 1 conditions, the mobility is partially affected and adults use a walker or a stick for movement. The short visits to washrooms become easier with the use of a walking aid. The dependency with mobility 1 on others is relatively negligible. Performing day-to-day activities like lying down on the bed, sitting down on a chair and using the toilet seat is easier.

adults are unable to walk without support
Mobility2

Mobility 2

Under mobility 2 condition, adults are unable to walk without human support. There is some dependency on human support for performing little to time-consuming activities. Adults with mobility condition 2 can sit and stand up by them but would need assistance for walking to the bathroom or to outdoor places.

Mobility 3

Under mobility 3 condition, adults cannot walk with only their human’s assistance but can only stand up with human’s assistance. With mobility condition 3, there is a dependency on a walking aid which might be a wheel chair or a walker. Day-to-day activities can only be performed with the support from a walking aid.

adults cannot stand up
Mobility4

Mobility 4

Under mobility condition 4, adults cannot stand up on own, but can sit up with other human’s support. They are dependent on others for their day to day activities like bathing, changing clothes and shopping.

adults are bedridden completely
Mobility5

Mobility 5

Under mobility condition 5, adults are bedridden completely. No kind of human or walking aid support is helpful in cases of mobility 5. They are completely dependent on their care givers for their day to day activities. Senior citizens have to perform their excretion on the bed only with the help of diapers, urinals and bed-pans.
